Having spent nearly all my professional career as a non-representational abstract painter, I was especially inspired by the challenge the Schaefer Portrait Challenge presented me. Determined to accept the challenge, I cleared my mind and schedule and allowed my creativity to emerge. What came through was “Me in Two Views.”
The basic premise is from a photograph I took of myself while standing with my back facing the mirror. Then a vision naturally occurred to place the figure (myself) in a surreal-like sugar field with lollipops and sweet confections. From my youth, that is what Hawaii meant to me, it was sweetness, it was candy land…and since moving here, I now know it truly is paradise.
I feel honored to be selected to show with the many fine portrait painters of Hawaii and thank you for encouraging artists in portraiture, this painting has been a wonderful journey for me.
